Facial Skin Cancer/ Lesions
The prevalence of skin cancer has dramatically increased over the past ten years. There are three types of skin cancer due to sun damage. These are Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and Melanoma. Sun damaged skin can also lead to premalignant lesions called Actinic Keratosis. These and some of the cancers can be treated with topical medications, but a significant number should be surgically removed.
Many noncancerous lesions can develop on the face as well. These are usually easily treated with excision and direct closure. We work closely with the internists and dermatologists in the area of the Berkshires and Southern Vermont. Whether we or your dermatologist/internist diagnose the facial lesion, we will manage it as a team, headed by you, the patient. We will discuss all of the treatment options and risks with you. You will be able to make an informed decision.
Once the lesion is removed, you should be followed by your physician and/or a dermatologist for recurrence or new lesions. In addition, we treat the head and neck only, therefore, a complete body exam should be included in the initial therapy.
