TMJ

Temporomandibular Joint Discomfort (TMJ) can be divided into two etiologies, myofacial pain disorder (MPD) or an anatomical problem. These can limit opening, restrict diet, and causes pain.

MPD is muscle pain. Anatomical abnormalities are irregularities of the bony architecture and/or cartilage. Both can cause the same symptoms, yet are treated differently. At Oral Surgery Associates, we can diagnose these disorders and recommend treatments. Most of the time, these treatments will be approached as a team of your dentist, us, and you. Other members may be required as well, such as Massage Therapists and Psychologists or Psychiatrists.

MPD is usually treated nonsurgically. The therapy may include medicines, diet and social changes, splint therapy, and/or steroid or Botulinum Toxin injections. Anatomical disorders may require surgical intervention. These will be discussed with you in detail at your initial visit.
